Parking House, Joensuu

The first MEK® XPG® lighting suspension rails in the world installed in Joensuu

The construction site of Karelian Työmaa is in the city centre of Joensuu, nearby the railway station. The construction site is a huge 688 slot parking hall.

Five floors are built now and for the future there is a two-floor reserve.

On the street level, there are many heated car slots and spaces for short term parking. On the same area, there will be four electric car charging stations in the near future.

Modern lighting

The entrance to the parking hall is a seamless two percent rise in angle.

Lighting of the parking hall is controlled by modern self-learning control system. The control system works unnoticed and saves energy used by the lighting.

Environmental sustainability in product choices

MEK® XPG lighting suspension rails are in straight lines to the top. Looking up from the floor level, it is not visible that the new surface treatment for corrosion classification C4 is being used. The products look like more commonly used MEK PG lighting suspension rails. Therefore, to avoid any mistakes marking and distinguishing these products has been an important task.

“We wanted to test products with the new surface treatment which are equivalent to the corrosion classification of HDG. Especially lower carbon footprint of XPG was an important element of the decision.” justifies Markku Mujunen, the project manager of Karelian Sähkö.

Another environmentally friendly aspect is the amount of zinc used which is 50% less compared to HDG products.

Installation and compatibility

In August it was time to install lighting suspension rails. MEK® XPG lighting suspension rails were used about three kilometres. “One man did the job quickly” tells Mujunen and continues “first a straight line using a laser, then everything on a lift and finally rails on their place”. Threaded rods could be installed four centimetres deep. However, the electrician specialist needed to be careful that threaded rods will not hit concrete tension bars inside.

“Everything was quite easy to install. The HDG´s typical grain surface was not there at all.” tells an experienced installer Kimmo Räsänen from Karelian Sähkö. “Excellent markings on the product”, he adds referring to product codes that can be found from the inner surface.

Painted white MEK lighting suspension rails were installed in the underground civil/population centre that functions as a heated bike storage in everyday use.
