Finlandia Hall, Helsinki

We arrived at the Finlandia Hall construction site on a bright autumn day to observe the electrical installations of the renovation project. The electrical work had begun in July 2022 and is scheduled to be completed by September 2024. The building itself will reopen to the public in January 2025.

Quattroservice Oy’s project manager, Petri Railakari, greeted us at the site entrance. Joining us on the tour were design manager Hannu Järvinen and project engineers Juha Laukkanen and Joel Valkonen. Railakari first guided us towards the majestic Finlandia Hall. The hall exudes its familiar elegance and dignity, but now boasts a modern lighting system, where each light’s color can be adjusted individually.

From Finlandia Hall, we proceeded to the grand foyer. The classic, stylish interior and the extensive use of marble immediately catch the eye. From the foyer, Railakari led us to the upper floors and the hall’s fly loft. The fly loft is an impressive technical space – numerous Meka KS20, KS60, and KS80 cable ladders, as well as lighting suspension rails, had been neatly installed in the ceiling. From beneath the walkways in the loft, glimpses of Finlandia Hall are visible, with the sheer height between the loft and the hall below being breathtaking.

Our journey then took us down to the basement, where up to four cable ladders were installed on top of each other in the corridors. The installations have been done meticulously and with great quality, as befitting the importance of this site. From the corridor, we entered a darkened hall where our attention was drawn to the ceiling. Black cable trays and Instal® cable trunkings had been installed in the black-painted ceiling and on the walls. The color choice made the cable routes almost invisible. At the end of our basement tour, we peeked into the building’s kitchen facilities. Like other areas, the electrical systems had been updated to meet modern requirements.

Back in the lower foyer, Railakari showed us a wall-mounted touch-screen lighting control panel, which allows the entire space’s lighting to be managed from a single location. Not everything was new, though: Mekan’s regional sales manager Tuija Isaksson pointed out the old wall tiles that had been preserved on the back wall – a beautiful detail that pays homage to the building’s original design.

At the end of the tour, I paused for a moment to admire the grandeur of Finlandia Hall from the outside. It’s clear that the renovation has been carried out with passion and precision, and it’s evident that the hall will once again offer unforgettable experiences to visitors when it reopens in 2025. The building is now better equipped for future challenges, yet its history has not been forgotten. Finally, I reflect on how special it was to get a behind-the-scenes glimpse of such an iconic cultural landmark.
